A Philly man will spend a decade behind bars for his role in a sex trafficking operation, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced yesterday. Mallie M. Evans, 37, was handed a 10-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to transporting individuals for prostitution.

Judge Karen M. Williams handed down the sentence to Evans on May 23, in Camden federal court, marking the end of a case that reveals the dark underbelly of the sex trade in the region. Evans admitted to driving victims across state lines from Philadelphia to central and southern New Jersey between 2015 and 2017, forcing them into prostitution for his own financial gain.

Evidence in court documents and statements made in court showed Evans employed threats, fraud, and violence to manipulate his victims. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, he used threats of death and bodily harm to control them and profit from their exploitation.

Beyond his prison term, Evan will be under supervised release for another, 10 years once he's out, Judge Williams ordered. The case was cracked by the FBI's Newark Division, helmed by Special Agent in Charge James E. Dennehy, who received commendation from U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger for their work on the investigation.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Alexander E. Ramey represented the government in the criminal case against Evans.
