Philly drivers, brace yourselves for a week of detours and delays. The Streets Department is putting the brakes on the Spring Garden Street Tunnel, starting this Monday. According to an announcement from Streets Commissioner Kristin Del Rossi, obtained by Phila.gov, the tunnel will be off-limits to traffic from May 20 at 8 AM until Friday, May 24 at high noon.
Officials are redirecting westbound vehicles at Pennsylvania Avenue to the Art Museum Circle, giving the Spring Garden Street the cold shoulder. While the tunnel's closure might throw a wrench in the daily commute, the city assures that this temporary inconvenience will expedite the necessary maintenance, making for smoother and safer travels in the near future.
Throughout the week, the Streets Department pledges to keep the disruption to the rumbling guts of city life—drivers, pedestrians, cyclists—as minimal as possible. "The Streets Department thanks citizens in advance for their patience and cooperation during this project," the department expressed, with a tip of the hat to Philadelphians' perennial resilience in the face of urban upheaval.
