In an effort to combat the persistent tide of drug overdoses that bears down on Phoenix, officials have unveiled a new weapon in their arsenal: a comprehensive data dashboard aimed to illuminate the grim statistics and foster awareness. According to 12 News, the Phoenix Substance Use and Overdose Dashboard breaks down suspected overdoses by age, ethnicity, and location by zip code, enabling residents to identify hotspots.
The city's first Public Health Advisor, Nicole Witt, has recognized the severity of the crisis saying, "We see more fatal overdoses in Phoenix than we do car crashes," with nearly 2,000 fatal overdoses in 2022 alone, over 3,000 people suffered from suspected opioid overdoses signalling an urgent call for proactive measures and raising awareness to prevent further loss of life. The Dashboard was birthed through collaboration between the Office of Public Health, Phoenix Police and Fire Departments, supported by City of Phoenix Information Technology Services (ITS), securing support through the Opioid Settlement funds via the One Arizona Agreement.
The seriousness of the opioid emergency has resonated deeply with Sarah Grado, chief programs officer at notMYkid, a behavioral health agency dealing with substance abuse in teens and their families. "Recently, we've had a lot of families come to us where they've actually lost their child to a fentanyl poisoning, and so that's probably the biggest trend or concern that we have right now," Grado conveyed to 12 News. She believes this dashboard will be strategic in raising awareness and prompting necessary discussions about drug use between parents and their children.
Opinions may vary, and the long-term impact of this initiative remains to be seen, but what stands clear is the city's commitment to leveraging transparency and data to turn the tide on a crisis that unforgivingly claims too many lives each year. For those seeking more information about the dashboard or the One Arizona Agreement, resources are available at the city website, shedding light on the mechanics of this novel digital tool designed to save lives.
