Plymouth Police Department Launches ‘Youth Anglers’ Initiative to Foster Community Bonds Through FishingSource: Facebook / Plymouth Police Department

It seems that the Plymouth Police Department is casting a wider net when it comes to community outreach, particularly with the launch of the Plymouth Police Youth Anglers initiative. Inspired by the success of a similar program run by the Gloucester Police Department, Plymouth's finest are now taking a hands-on approach to mentorship through the sport of fishing. Officer Donald Berger, who pitched the idea to Police Chief Flynn, received enthusiastic approval to "hook it up," as reported on the department's Facebook page.

The program which aims to teach kids how to reel in Stripers among other fishes, is not just about angling; it is an initiative to instill discipline, patience, and perhaps a greater sense of life's ebb and flow within the youth that these officers serve daily. Local businesses like Bass Pro Shops and Cherry's Bait have already thrown their support behind the project, the former donating the first five saltwater rods and the latter providing all the live bait needed, ensuring Officer Berger's idea was off to a swimming start.

Plymouth's six School Resource Officers are on the lookout to identify youngsters who could benefit from learning a new skill and building relationships with some of the town's most experienced fishermen. It's a community effort, anchored in the belief that something as timeless as casting a line can bridge gaps and anchor young people to more positive life currents.

Given the collaborative nature of the Plymouth Police Youth Anglers, the department is open to community contributions; those interested in supporting the initiative can reach out directly by contacting Officer Donald Berger at [email protected], the authorities shared on their social media, their lines are open and officers are eager to reel in the support for a richer, more connected community.
