A propane tank explosion rocked Downtown Rochester, injuring several people, including three seriously, authorities said. The incident occurred around 8:45 p.m. on Saturday outside 423 Main Bar, Grill & Rooftop according to Rochester Police Department, as detailed by WWJ. Witnesses reported that the tank, being used for an outdoor heating lamp, caught fire and subsequently exploded.
Five people were taken to the hospital, among them three children, Rochester Fire Chief John Cieslik confirmed to WXYZ. The patients were expected to have good outcomes despite the frightening ordeal that unfolded on the busy street, which remained closed for several hours after the blast. Responding to the chaos, police officials initially said that, with several others suffering minor injuries, three sustained serious injuries.
The smell of gas lingered in the area following the explosion that sent an alarm through the neighborhood. Mark Mendola, owner of D'Marco's Italian Restaurant and Wine Bar, "Extremely loud. It just rattled everyone in the restaurant. We're hoping everyone is okay," Mendola stated.
According to a Detroit News report, the propane tank was positioned outside of an unidentified business when it exploded, injuring multiple people ranging from adults to children. Authorities have not released detailed information about the victims or the aftermath aside from acknowledging the injuries and deeming the explosion accidental.
Police officials have launched an investigation into the exact cause, though early indications suggest the incident to be accidental. Both Rochester police and fire department officials are yet to divulge more details. Meanwhile, treatment was provided at the scene for two individuals who were later released, as per Langton's coverage on WWJ.
