In a show of civic engagement and development, the Queen Creek Town Council has recognized 48 individuals who completed the town's Citizen Leadership Institute. At the May 15 meeting, Mayor Julia Wheatley lauded the graduates for their commitment to understanding and shaping the future of their community, a sentiment echoed by the council.

Among the honorees this year were a variety of local residents, such as Alex Fredericks, Anna Anderson, and Bob Johnson. Each of these individuals, alongside their fellow graduates, devoted time to attend sessions covering vital local governance topics – from zoning laws to economic strategies. To graduate, the institute requires dedication; participants must attend at least seven sessions, sit in on a town meeting, join a committee or commission meeting, and contribute to volunteer and group projects.c

These group projects directly benefit local initiatives and institutions. A team focused their efforts on supporting the Family Resource Center, exceeding their goal by collecting 1,066 toiletry items intended for those in need, reported QueenCreekAZ.gov. Graduates also gathered back-to-school supplies, including over 100 backpacks for the Mary Gloria Foundation, and helped build a marketing foundation for Father McGivney's Food Bank. An additional project saw the promotion of the Rotary Club of Queen Creek's Rotary Run for Resilience, aiming to bolster community participation and resilience through the event.

The Citizen Leadership Institute's larger purpose resonates with a goal to not only educate residents about the inner workings of Queen Creek but to ignite an enthusiasm for municipal matters and prepare participants for future leadership roles. With sights set on community growth and improvement, the Queen Creek area encourages local residents and workers to get involved, though holding positions on most Town committees requires residency within town limits. As for those interested in making a difference in 2025, enrollment begins in January and is cost-free. More information can be found by visiting the town's official website or following their social media outlets for updates.
