A Riverside County deputy fatally shot a man after a confrontation during a probation compliance check in Perris, authorities said Tuesday. The incident, which left no deputies injured, occurred on the morning of May 13 when authorities were dispatched to the 3300 block of Albillo Loop, as reported by the Riverside Sheriff's Department.

According to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department from the department, during the check, deputies encountered several adults in the backyard. One man tried to quickly walk away after giving false identification and ignored deputies' commands to stop. A Taser was used in an attempt to subdue the individual, however, it proved to be ineffective. The situation escalated when the man allegedly produced a handgun, prompting a deputy to open fire.

The suspect was struck by the gunfire. Deputies immediately provided medical aid until paramedics transported him to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The Riverside County Sheriff's Department has not yet released the name of the suspect or the deputy involved in the shooting.

An ongoing investigation is being headed by an investigator from the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office who is assigned to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Force Investigations Detail. The deputy involved in the incident has been placed on paid administrative leave, aligning with departmental policy. Officials have called for those with information regarding the incident to come forward and have contact provided the numbers of Senior District Attorney Investigator JR Ferrer or Riverside County Sheriff’s Investigator Jason Letterly at 951-955-2777 for any leads.
