Rochester's classrooms are set to get a major funding boost, thanks to the efforts of local lawmakers in the Minnesota legislature. In a key development on Tuesday, the Education Finance Conference Committee, which includes both House and Senate members, agreed to pump additional money into Rochester Public Schools as part of this year's supplemental Education Budget. Senator Liz Boldon, a Democrat representing Rochester, was instrumental in securing this windfall for the district.

Senator Boldon didn't hesitate to quickly inform the public about the budget's benefits for Rochester's education system, particularly emphasizing a new initiative aimed to ensure students stay on track academically. "I am grateful for the inclusion of Rochester Public Schools in our new Student Attendance Pilot Project, which will come with over $600,000 in funding to our district to boost attendance rates," Boldon said in a statement. She believes it's vital for students to not only be present but also to actively engage in their schooling.

The funding blitz doesn't end there. The P-TECH program in Rochester, designed to prep Minnesota's youth for STEM careers, is slated to receive a generous allocation of over $1.5 million. Boldon lauded the local P-TECH program as an exemplary approach and hailed the commitment to fully fund it into the next biennium. Starting in fiscal year 2025, Rochester Public Schools (RPS) is secured an annual appropriation from the state budget dedicated to P-TECH programming, which could result in additional awards in subsequent years.

"It also creates the opportunity for Rochester's excellence to become a model for new P-TECH programs around the state," Boldon pointed out, highlighting the possibility for RPS to not only receive further assistance but also to serve as a benchmark for the establishment of similar initiatives across Minnesota. She is eyeing an expanded state-backed P-TECH funding pool in the future to sustain Rochester’s program and support new ones statewide, according to her remarks obtained by senatedfl.mn.

With the report from the Education Finance Conference Committee penciled in, all that remains is for both the House and Senate to pass it in the upcoming days, signaling a legislative win for Rochester's educational landscape and potentially setting a new precedent for school funding across the Gopher State.
