San Antonio is gearing up for a slam dunk economy boost as the city starts rolling out the welcome mat for the 2025 NCAA Men's Final Four. Elena Wells, executive director of the event's local organizing committee, said the hoopla is expected to rake in a whopping $250 million, according to a KSAT interview. Restaurants, bars, and hotels are particularly jazzed about the influx of basketball fans, looking to rebound financially after the hard fouls dealt by recent global events.
Preparations are already underway for the college hoops showdown, with the city known for The Alamo and the festive River Walk expecting to become a major player on the court of major sporting events. The Alamodome will play host to the games from April 4-7, marking the city's fifth time in the spotlight for this event. Melanie Arismendi, general manager of Alibis Sports Bar shared with KSAT that events like the Final Four "keep our doors open."
On top of the expected economic windfall, San Antonio's local organizing committee is tapping into the community spirit by recruiting 2,500 volunteers to ensure the tournament runs as smoothly as a perfect layup. It's not just the businesses that will benefit; the event is poised to leave a longer-term impact on local workers' wallets, too. "All these people, they make extra money too because they’re working off of tips, so once they start making the extra money, they go out a little bit more, and so we see not just the direct impact of the weekend but also for the weeks to come," Ernest Bradley co-owner of Cherrity Bar, emphasized in the same statement to KSAT.
As part of the hype train, or should we say Fan Jam? The local committee is sending out a mobile basketball fiesta replete with a court and hoops, giving residents a chance to shoot some baskets and snap photos with the 2025 trophy throughout the next 355 days. "This is the Fan Jam, and get ready because the Fan Jam will be out and around town over the next 355 days visiting schools and events," Wells enthused. With plans like these San Antonio, may just be the city where every shot, whether basketball or economic, seems to turn nothing, but net.
