The City of San Antonio's efforts to enhance the lives of its elderly population have paid off, as the Department of Human Services proudly announced that its 11 comprehensive Senior Centers have achieved national accreditation. This prestigious recognition is not only a nod to the city's commitment to quality services for older adults but also places these centers among a select group of facilities that have met the rigorous criteria for excellence.
In detailed information made available by the City of San Antonio, the accreditation process is a meticulous one that spans six to 12 months and is organized into two main phases. This includes a community self-assessment aligning with nine national senior center standards and an on-site evaluation by a certified peer reviewer. The Centers are now part of an elite cadre, joining just 101 other accredited sites in the nation.
Of the estimated 11,000 senior centers across the United States, San Antonio's accomplishment puts it in the vanguard of senior care. The city’s 11 comprehensive Senior Centers were built upon recommendations by the City and County Joint Commission on Elderly Affairs back in 2003, with a focus on fostering spaces where seniors could convene for meals, activities, and services.
San Antonio’s partnerships have been a cornerstone of its success. Companies and non-profits like WellMed Medical Management, WellMed Charitable Foundation, Oasis, OATS, Bihl Haus Art, YMCA, YWCA, and Urban-15 have all played vital roles. These collaborations have expanded programming at the centers, offering art, fitness, dance and technology classes that cater to a diverse range of interests and needs. In a celebration of its accomplishment, the Senior Centers will recognize the accreditation during Older Americans Month this May.
The centers, which are open Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., provide not just a nutritious mid-day meal but also a comprehensive slate of wellness activities. These accolades and services underscore the city's dedication to its senior residents. Those interested in partaking in the offerings can contact the Department of Human Services Senior Services Division for more details.
