San Diego Humane Society Hosts Free Adoption Fair and 'Prepare Fair' to Protect Pets This SummerSource: San Diego Humane Society

San Diego's pet lovers, get ready to make some furry friends and protect the ones you have — without spending a dime. In a move sure to wag tails citywide, the San Diego Humane Society is rolling out the red carpet for pets and their owners on June 1. This adoption event and fair are designed to quickly place pets in loving homes and help current pet owners safeguard their companions before the hectic summer season hits.

Thanks to partnerships with heavy-hitters like CalAnimals, ASPCA, and SFSPCA, all adoption fees are being waived for every animal up for grabs, and yes, we're talking about the cutest puppies and kittens, too. According to a shelter release, wanna-be pet owners have from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to find their new best friend, with "nearly 600 pets available for adoption." If you're already stocked up on critters at home, you're invited to the 'Prepare Fair,' slated between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Here, your pets can get all the bells and whistles to stay safe: free microchips, ID tags, licenses — the works. To catch a sneak peek of your potential new family member, the full lineup is on display at sdhumane.org/adopt.

Summer can be a beast for pets, with July Fourth fireworks turning even the bravest furball into a scaredy-cat. "Shelters see the largest number of stray pets during summer, especially over the July Fourth holiday," warns the Humane Society in their press release. Last year alone, 323 stray pets were taken between July 4-7, and only 62 were reunited with their owners. To combat this, the San Diego Humane Society is throwing a lifeline to pet owners with free one-year licenses, microchips, and ID tags to ensure a wayward pet can find their way back to their worried humans.

Don’t just bark up the right tree — head to any San Diego Humane Society campus with your pups on a leash or cats in carriers to take advantage of the giveaways. According to the shelter's statement, owners will need to show proof of current Rabies vaccination to score the free dog licensing. And for your pet to be the most stylish in the neighborhood, why not snag a personalized, engraved ID tag? Just be sure to quickly fill out the required form by May 30, and you can collect your tag at the fair while supplies last.
