Chaos erupted at the Cinco de Mayo Festival in Santa Rosa when a man was spotted menacing the crowd with a large knife. Sebastopol Road became the center of a dramatic police incident after a 37-year-old transient threatened passersby and vehicles, according to the SRPD. Identified as Elmundo Cruz, the man brandished a 7-inch blade amidst the festival's revelry at approximately 4:36 p.m.
An alert community member first noticed Cruz's alarming behavior, promptly notifying on-duty officers managing traffic and security for the event. The police arrived to find Cruz with an alcoholic beverage in one hand and the knife in the other, making stabbing motions. Despite the officers' commands to put down the weapon, Cruz proceeded to walk toward the crowded festival, prompting a swift response. An officer employed a non-lethal "Taser" to prevent what could have been a tragic turn of events, using the device's "arc" function as a visual and auditory deterrent.
