Sunday's fire is not the first to threaten this stretch near the Marin-Sonoma border. In September 2024, Cal Fire LNU extinguished the 11-acre Antonio Fire along the 1300 block of San Antonio Road in Petaluma after grass flames threatened nearby structures, ultimately contained with the help of roads and air retardant drops. A separate 23.5-acre blaze, the San Antonio Fire, burned near San Antonio Road and D Street in June 2023, requiring a coordinated mutual-aid response from Novato, Marin County, Petaluma, and Sonoma County fire agencies, according to KTVU FOX 2.

The area's light, flashy fuels and highway proximity make it prone to late-summer ignitions. The City of Petaluma warned in a May community update that roadside parking and heat generated by lawnmowers or power tools after 10 AM are common triggers for fast-spreading grass fires along local transit corridors.

A Broader Pattern Across California

Sonoma County's brush-meets-solar problem isn't isolated. Cal Fire responded to a 150-acre vegetation fire that spread into the California Solar Farm in San Luis Obispo County in April, and the agency later contained a 285-acre blaze there in June after grass ignited adjacent to another solar farm and tore through light vegetation, according to KEYT. Together, the incidents point to a growing operational challenge as more grass-fire-prone rural land in California gets developed with renewable energy infrastructure.

It remains unclear whether Sunday's fire caused any physical or electrical damage to the Sonoma County solar facility, or what vegetation management practices had been maintained beneath its panels. Cal Fire has not detailed the cause of the blaze, and the incident was still being treated as a developing story as of Sunday night.
