A routine traffic stop by Santa Rosa Police led to the surprising discovery of a fully automatic machine gun on Sunday night. According to an official SRPD report, an officer pulled over a silver Ford Fusion for speeding and registration issues at the corner of West Third Street and Stony Point Road just as the clock struck 8:00 p.m.
Upon interacting with the vehicle's occupants, the rear passenger, identified as 19-year-old Rico Hermosillo-Lozano of Santa Rosa, admitted to having a firearm. This admission soon turned routine into remarkable as the officer uncovered a Glock 26 9mm, not just loaded but modified with a "Glock switch" in the man's satchel. The device turns a legally purchased semi-automatic firearm into an unlawful machine gun with the flick of a switch. Hermosillo-Lozano was taken into custody without further incident.
Hermosillo-Lozano is now facing several felony charges, including possession of a machine gun, possession of a loaded, unregistered firearm, possession of a loaded firearm by a gang member, and carrying a concealed firearm in a vehicle, according to the Santa Rosa Police Department.
The suspect was booked into the Sonoma County Main Adult Detention Facility, where he remains in custody. SRPD has logged this incident under case number 24-5702 for those seeking further information.
