Quick action by a Schertz cop is being credited with stopping a fire from turning an apartment complex into ash. Earlier this month, Officer Bill Freeman of the Schertz Police Department was the first to roll up to Sycamore Creek Apartments following a 911 call about a blaze.
With no time to lose, Freeman spotted smoke pouring out of an upstairs unit. He hustled to clear the building, barking at residents to get out, before charging into the smoke himself. Freeman, armed only with an extinguisher, battled the flames until they bowed to his will. “He ensured all occupants were safely evacuated before entering the smoke-filled apartment with his fire extinguisher in hand,” reported FOX San Antonio.
His solo stand held the line until backup arrived. The Schertz and Cibolo Fire Departments joined the fray and together, they smothered the fire for good. If not for Freeman's gall and a quick-draw response from local fire squads, things could have gotten real hot for the folks at Sycamore Creek.
Residents and their homes were spared thanks to this rapid teamwork. An entire block of homes stood uncharred, and the nightmare of mass displacement was dodged by a hair. The combined effort of Officer Freeman and the fire departments earned them accolades from a relieved community, proving yet again that sometimes, a few good men and a fire extinguisher are all it takes to stop disaster dead in its smoky tracks.
