San Antonio police say someone opened fire on the two people inside a vehicle just before 7 a.m. Sunday, critically injuring the driver, according to KSAT. Police describe the shooter as driving a red Chevy truck of unknown year, and say he remains at large as the search continues. Wounded Driver Gave Chase Before Flagging Down Help
After being shot, the driver chased the shooter westbound in his truck before losing him and returning to the scene, per the same account. An SAPD officer then spotted the driver exiting a black truck and approaching for help. Investigators believe the victims and the shooter appear to know each other, a detail that aligns with how San Antonio police typically characterize violent crime in the city.
Personal Disputes Drive Most Local Violence, Police Say
Official quarterly crime statistics published by the City of San Antonio note that SAPD analysts attribute the majority of local violent crimes to personal disputes among acquaintances or high-risk behaviors, a pattern investigators appear to be applying to Sunday's shooting. If caught, the shooter could face serious charges. Under Texas Penal Code § 22.02, shooting someone inside a vehicle constitutes Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, a second-degree felony punishable by two to 20 years in prison and a fine up to $10,000, according to FindLaw. Separately, Texas Penal Code § 22.05 classifies knowingly discharging a firearm at or in the direction of an occupied vehicle as Deadly Conduct, a third-degree felony punishable by two to 10 years in prison.
A Block With a Violent Past
Cherry Ridge Drive is a residential roadway cutting through the Greater Dellview neighborhood on San Antonio's North Side, situated just inside Interstate 410 near Vance Jackson Road, as described by the San Antonio Express-News. The block has seen repeated violence in recent years. In September 2023, San Antonio police investigated a road-rage shooting on eastbound Loop 410 near Cherry Ridge Drive in which a 31-year-old wounded driver parked on the street before being hospitalized, KSAT reported at the time. Another shooting struck Cherry Ridge Drive near Vance Jackson Road in September 2025, that time involving an alleged dispute between teenagers, according to KENS 5. The block's history stretches back decades: city cold case records show the 400 block was the site of an unsolved 1980 double murder, in which Margaret and Keith Conable were killed in their home after neighbors heard gunshots and a vehicle speeding away.
Citywide Homicides Down, but Assaults Hold Steady
Sunday's shooting comes as San Antonio's overall homicide numbers continue to fall. A violent crime analysis published by the San Antonio Report indicates homicides fell 8% during the first six months of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025, extending a decline that followed an 18.5% drop in citywide homicides in 2025 under the city's Violent Crime Reduction Plan. But aggravated assaults have not followed the same trend. Midyear reporting from the Major Cities Chiefs Association shows San Antonio police recorded 2,937 aggravated assaults between January and June 2026, a slight increase from 2,867 during the first half of 2025.
