A tense five-hour standoff in Seattle's Pioneer Square came to a close on Friday after police arrested a 55-year-old man who allegedly brandished a gun and a knife at a 31-year-old victim. The Seattle Police Department reported on their official blog that they had received a 911 call around 11:00 a.m. regarding a man with weapons on the 500 block of 2nd Avenue.
Upon their arrival, police said they were able to quickly locate the suspect holed up inside the Sinking Ship parking garage, his weapons visible. The suspect was unwilling to readily comply with officers' demands, which escalated the standoff. The SPD dispatched their Hostage Negotiation Team, Crisis Response Team, and SWAT team to assist in safely defusing the situation. The area was swiftly secured by patrol officers to ensure the public's safety.
After enduring negotiations for hours, authorities finally convinced the man to surrender. "After more than five hours of negotiations, the suspect was taken into custody," the Seattle Police detailed. The man now faces charges of Felony Harassment, Resisting Arrest, and Criminal Trespass. During the arrest, officers confiscated a realistic-looking handgun and a large kitchen knife.
The suspect, whose name has not been released, was transported and booked into the King County Jail. The incident resulted in no injuries, and the West Precinct Incident Commander was reported to monitor the evolving scene continually. Details are still coming in, and officials are expected to release more information once they have fully processed the scene and the investigation advances.
