Sending a clear message in the ongoing debate over gun control, Senator Grant Hauschild of Hermantown has declared he would not back the proposed gun storage law, calling it a challenge to the rights of law-abiding citizens to defend themselves, according to an announcement on the Senate DFL website.
Hauschild, representing a predominantly rural constituency, argued that the safe storage measure could impede a gun owner's ability to respond swiftly during life-threatening situations; the senator underlined the unique needs of Northern Minnesotans, asserting they are responsible with firearms and the proposed legislation would not increase their safety or change the way they handle their weapons, “Unlike other proposals to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous individuals, this year’s legislation surrounding storage of firearms could jeopardize the ability of my law-abiding constituents to protect themselves or their families in an emergency," Hauschild noted.
The senator's firm stance against the bill makes its passage in the 2024 Legislative Session unlikely, as his position signals insufficient support to move the proposal to the Senate Floor for a vote. Hauschild's constituents have a historically pro-gun perspective which the senator's current stance seeks to represent and uphold.
In his earlier tenure, Hauschild was vocal about his opposition to similar firearm regulation, maintaining his commitment to the Second Amendment rights of Minnesotans, “Since being elected to the State Senate, I have been clear in my opposition to a Gun Storage Law. That has not changed," he stressed, as local gun owners nod in approval, certain that their representative in the State Senate understands what it means to live in the rural stretches where police response times can be as unpredictable as the weather.
