A tragic scene unfolded in Magnolia, Texas, where a 16-year-old boy was killed when two homes under construction collapsed during a severe storm on Tuesday. The young worker, identified as John Aaron Garcia, was caught under the falling debris and did not survive, authorities said.
The collapse occurred in a new subdivision on Willow Heights Lane near FM 1488, with emergency calls placed just before 12:30 p.m. Amid the tempest, a structure gave way, gravely setting the scene for a recovery mission that stretched on for hours. According to the KTRK report, responders were hindered by additional structural instability, which threatened further collapses that could endanger rescue teams.
“After we got there, another part of the building started to collapse. So we had to spend some time shoring up that part of the structure so it didn't endanger any of the firefighters that were trying to remove the debris," Cpt. Bryan Perry with the Magnolia Fire Department detailed. Fire departments from Woodlands, Conroe, and North Montgomery County all took part in the operation that lasted over three hours, but their efforts could not prevent the tragedy.
Witnessing the ordeal, fellow construction worker Christian Hernandez described his harrow, having watched from a vantage outside as the buildings succumbed to nature's wrath. "We saw houses move really bad, and then we heard cracking noises. We thought, 'That house is going to fall,'" he told KTRK. "I was scared. I picked up my tools and called my dad because it was like a tornado." Montgomery County officials later confirmed that although the collapse coincided with the storm, an investigation was ongoing to ascertain the definitive cause.
Additionally, the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office Homicide and Violent Crimes Unit, along with Crime Scene investigators, are conducting their own investigation on site as per protocol for any fatal industrial accidents, as reported by FOX 26 Houston. Authorities noted there does not appear to be a criminal element at this juncture.
