Texans hit by recent storms have a bit of good news coming their way as Governor Greg Abbott announced that the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients in the state can now use their benefits to buy hot foods and ready-to-eat meals, including grocery store deli items and rotisserie chicken, according to a release from the Governor's office. This federal nod from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service is a temporary adjustment, set to help those affected by natural calamities to access more diverse food options through June 30. Abbott emphasized the importance of this aid saying, "This federal approval allowing eligible Texans to purchase fresh, hot foods will help impacted Texans provide for their families and put food on the table," in a statement obtained by the Governor's website.
Residents can apply for these SNAP benefits simply by dialing 2-1-1, and benefits are slated to be made available within two business days once they're approved, yet, for those outside the listed counties there's a time limit, to apply for replacement benefits in person, they have got a 10-day window upon the loss or destruction of their food due to severe weather. Molly Regan, HHSC Access and Eligibility Services Deputy Executive Commissioner acknowledged the comfort that something as simple as a hot meal can give to families in trying times, "Having additional options in the grocery store will help SNAP clients get back on their feet sooner," she conveyed in a release.
The initiative covers a substantial swathe of Texas, with over 40 counties listed as eligible for the hot food purchase benefit, and an additional five counties, recently added to the list for phone application of replacement benefits for food lost or destroyed by the storms starting May 16. To streamline the process, Texans can mail or fax completed Form H1855 for the affidavit of nonreceipt or destroyed SNAP benefits.
The state has made it easier for individuals needing assistance to navigate the system, promoting the YourTexasBenefits.com website and a mobile app to apply for benefits including SNAP and Medicaid, and the standard procedure to find local resources such as food or shelter, is to dial 2-1-1, select Option 1, an easily remembered procedure in the event of a crisis or urgent need. In the continuous efforts to reach affected individuals, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission suggests visiting the HHS website for those seeking in-person aid for replacement benefits, a pragmatic step for those seeking rapid response in the aftermath of the storms.
