Two kayakers who went missing while paddling near Charity Island in Saginaw Bay were safely rescued on Tuesday night, after the U.S. Coast Guard launched a helicopter search operation. The duo had been reported as overdue in the Tawas area, prompting an urgent response from Air Station Detroit and Sector Detroit, as per information released by the Coast Guard. The helicopter crew conducted a focused search along the island’s shoreline and successfully located the kayakers, who had found themselves stranded.
Following the rescue, official video footage was shared by the Coast Guard, showcasing the moment the men were hoisted to safety aboard the helicopter. Despite the potential danger of their situation, the kayakers were found to be in stable condition. They were subsequently transported to Wurtsmith Air Base in Iosco County, where local EMS crews were ready to fully quickly assess and take care of any medical needs, according to WWJ.
The successful operation highlighted the training and coordination among the various Coast Guard teams. Lt. Cmdr. Matthew Smith, the helicopter aircraft commander, acknowledged this in his statement reported by WNEM, "This was a team effort and I’d like to commend the coordination from Sector Detroit and our crews. This is what we train for, and we are glad we got to bring these men home safely."
Despite the successful resolution, the circumstances that led the men to become stranded were not disclosed by the Coast Guard. Additionally, there was no mention of how long the kayakers had been on the island before their rescue. Further details concerning the identities of the individuals, including their names and ages, were also withheld. For more inquiries, Lt. Cristina Lippert, Coast Guard Air Station Detroit Public Affairs Officer could be reached, highlighted Michigan's Thumb in their coverage of the incident.
