The suspect, identified as 41-year-old Jessie Smith from Southeast, is accused of an armed confrontation that sent chills down the spine of a driver trapped in traffic, according to Metropolitan Police Department announcement.
The alarming encounter took place during the evening rush hour of May 9, 2023, when the victim, stationed in their car on Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, became the focus of a coercive and dangerous situation, the suspect barged into the vehicle, wielding a gun, and demanded the victim to pull over, in a chaotic attempt to escape, the driver set off a collision with another vehicle but even after this, the assailant managed to flee on foot, disappearing into the city's sprawling network of streets and alleys.
A year of investigative work led to a breakthrough on Wednesday, May 15, when the authorities, acting on a D.C. Superior Court arrest warrant, cuffed Smith and slapped him with a charge of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (gun).
