A man suspected of mail theft led deputies on a high-speed chase before being nabbed with a trove of stolen checks and counterfeit postal keys, authorities said. Benjamin Williams was arrested after a pursuit that terminated in the 9000 block of FM 2920 Road, where deputies managed to take the suspect into custody.
Constable Mark Herman's office responded to a call on May 24th from a Postal Police Inspector, who had pinpointed a potential suspect at a Wendy's parking lot on the 8800 block of Spring Cypress Road, a statement detailed on the department's Facebook page. Evading deputies eastbound, Williams allegedly led them on a pursuit after refusing to pull over for a traffic stop initiated by Herman's deputy.
Once the episode reached its end, the Postal Police Investigator conducted a search of Williams' vehicle, uncovering what was described as two counterfeit postal keys and several checks, which collectively amounted to a value of over $100,000.00. Inspector Farmer is handling the investigation concerning the keys and checks, having taken possession of them following their discovery.
"Benjamin Williams was arrested and booked into the Harris County Jail, charged with Evading in a Motor Vehicle. His bond was set at $8,000.00 out of the 179th District Court," recounted Constable Mark Herman in a statement. The Postal Police, taking the investigation further, also leveled federal charges against Williams, including two counts of Unlawful Use of a Criminal Instrument and Possession of Identifying Information, as he now awaits bond for these additional charges."
