In a caper that seemed to end as quickly as it began, a known shoplifter's dash for freedom took a thwarting turn in Brentwood. Officials reported that around 8:30 PM on April 30th, Brentwood police responded to a call from Michael’s Arts and Crafts about a theft in progress. The suspect was identified as Mathew Davis, a 32-year-old from Antioch who authorities claim stole roughly $1,400 worth of goods.
Officers arrived on the scene posthaste, only to witness the suspect hastily trying to escape the vicinity on a bicycle after ditching the stolen merchandise. A Brentwood Sergeant spotted Davis and moved in, but Davis pedaled away in a futile attempt to evade capture. A dramatic twist ensued when another officer stationed nearby attempted to intercept the fleeing suspect. Davis ultimately collided with the officer's parked patrol car, sealing his fate.
A statement released by the City of Brentwood Police Department detailed the incident, emphasizing that "Davis, who did not sustain any injuries, was safely taken into custody." His apprehension came without further incident, and fortunately, no parties were harmed during the brief pursuit.
Davis is no stranger to the local legal system, already on felony probation for theft and bound by a court order to stay clear of Kohl's. The twists and turns of his latest misadventure led to his arrest for shoplifting, felony probation violation, court order violation, and other charges related to the botched theft. The full account of Davis's ill-fated heist was outlined in a report shared by the Brentwood Police Department on their Facebook page.
