The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is deep into a double homicide case in the small town of Bean Station, officials reported. In collaboration with the Grainger County Sheriff's Office, TBI agents are combing through evidence found along Rocky Springs Road, where the horrible deaths occurred. "At this time, the investigation remains active and ongoing," the TBI stated, as WVLT News reported.
Resident Jennifer Herron described the impact of the crime on the community as "just sad," according to WBIR. Herron knew the individual who lived at the home caught in this morbid scene, recounting him as a generous soul who "had a good heart and would do anything for anybody." Unfortunately, she indicated that the area has become a hub for nocturnal gatherings, saying, "Lot of people walking down the streets up down during the night, bicycles, and they seemed to congregate through there."
While specifics about the victims or potential suspects remain under wraps, neighbors aren't just lamenting their loss; they're voicing worries over a spike in illegal activities. Wesley Maulden, a former Bean Station inhabitant, highlighted a troubling trend when he spoke to WBIR, mentioning, "Word on the street was drug activity was related to this crime." Maulden's family left the town roughly 20 years ago but the escalation in violence and drug problems remains a concerning backdrop to this tragedy.
Moreover, Herron pointed out an additional worrying development due to an "influx of homeless people" post-COVID. As she said, as per WBIR, the pandemic has brought forth new challenges to her community which she hopes will garner the attention it desperately needs. "I hope this puts a spotlight on what's happening in our community," Herron said. "People that need help people down on their luck resources to come here."
Both the TBI and the local sheriff's office are maintaining tight lips on the progress of their findings. Since Saturday, they have been involved at the request of 4th Judicial District Attorney General Jimmy Dunn, and they've been working closely to unravel the events that led to the current investigation. WJHL reports that the agencies have yet to provide an update on the advances in the case since announcing it as a double homicide.
