Teenage carjackers have been caught by police after a high-adrenaline chase through Northeast D.C. streets, law enforcement officials say. The duo, both 16, allegedly took a moped at gunpoint before being tracked down from the skies by an Air Support Unit. Their nefarious joyride came to an abrupt end as detectives closed in, assisted by eyes in the sky, following the signal from above straight to the suspects and cuffing them for armed carjacking.
The Metropolitan Police Department reported that the incident occurred last Friday around seven in the evening. The suspects allegedly accosted the moped owner on the 3900 block of Benning Road, pulling a firearm to forcefully to extract the keys. The victim, complying under duress, watched as his moped was commandeered by the two teens. The official MPD statement detailed the crime and subsequent arrests, noting the key role played by the Air Support Unit in spotting the stolen vehicle from above.
After the arrest, the young suspects were charged with the serious count of Armed Carjacking. These allegations cast a grim light on juvenile crime in the city, bringing to the forefront the disturbing trend of teens involved in violent crimes. This incident serves as a stark reminder that the issue of youth violence and delinquency demands attention and intervention by the community and law enforcement alike.
The precise location of the teens following the vehicle theft was not immediately clear, but the Air Support Unit was able to quickly locate the moped, enabling ground detectives to rapidly to converge on the suspects' location. According to MPD, their quick response ensured the suspects could not escape justice and highlighted the efficacy of coordinated law enforcement efforts. Despite the clear dangers posed by armed criminals, police were able to execute the arrest without injury to the public or the offenders.
