The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is turning to the public once more, seeking comments on their draft for a new long-range transportation blueprint, called - Connecting Texas 2050. According to the TxDOT, the plan is a comprehensive approach addressing the Lone Star State's diverse transportation systems, ranging from roadways to air and seaports, over the next quarter century.
An earlier round of public outreach in 2023 has guided TxDOT's hand, coloring the draft with widespread concerns and suggestions. Texans have been vocal about wanting safer, more accessible, and cost-effective ways to crisscross the state while also urging TxDOT to pay attention to environmental impacts such as air quality and extreme weather events. Now the department is once more asking for feedback, with the public comment period opened from May 10 through June 9, which, was detailed on TxDOT's website.
Insights gleaned from previous community engagements indicate that nearly a third of respondents desire a substantial chunk of the state transportation budget assigned to passenger and commuter rail services. The ongoing conversation also reflects a strong push towards enhancing public transit overall.
Other key points from the public's input, including how to tackle freight congestion and truck parking shortages, along with integrating rural towns into the broader network, were highlighted on TxDOT's official announcement. Current technological advancements haven't been missed, with a focus on the future of electric vehicles, autonomous transportation, and the necessity for broader broadband capabilities.
The six ambitious goals outlined by TxDOT for Connecting Texas 2050 broadly cover safety, infrastructure preservation, improved mobility and connectivity, economic vitality, and impactful stewardship of resources. A virtual public hearing is set for 5:30 p.m. CDT on Tuesday, May 28, giving people yet another avenue to weigh in. Those interested can register online or by phone through the public involvement page linked on their website.
TxDOT has made the draft plan available for review on the Connecting Texas 2050 website, at district offices, and at their Austin headquarters. Texans looking to shape the future of transportation in their state can submit their thoughts via an online form, email, written mail, or even voicemail up until the deadline on June 9. This open comment window is the final chance for public input on the matter before the plan moves forward.
