A year and a half following a string of brazen thefts at Buddhist temples across North Texas, the White Settlement Police Department has made a key arrest. The suspect, Narcis Chiciu, was apprehended in Woodbury, Minnesota, by local police and is awaiting extradition to Tarrant County, Texas. The news was shared by the White Settlement Police Department in a press statement that honored their detectives' relentless pursuit of justice in a case that sparked considerable attention in the Dallas-Fort Worth community.
The suspect, Chiciu, was identified as the lead in a diversionary theft operation targeting the Wat Busayadhammvanaram Buddhist Temple, among other religious institutions, during a high-donation period. "The old saying that you can run but you can't hide rings true in this case," said Chief of Police Christopher Cook, per the White Settlement Police Department. Facial recognition technology played a critical role in pinpointing Chiciu one year after the November 2022 incident.
The theft, dating back to November 20, 2022, involved a silver minivan used to transport the group of suspects to the temple, provoking significant concern amongst the North Texas faith communities. Investigators believe that the temple was specifically targeted for its amassed donations. According to the original release, $38,000 in cash donations were stolen in less than half an hour, causing not only financial loss but also damage to the property and the community's sense of security.
Leveraging law enforcement databases with the cooperation of the Westworth Village Police Department, the White Settlement Police eventually secured a second-degree felony warrant for Chiciu on charges of Engaging in Organized Criminal Activity. The suspect's capture is a significant development in the case, as authorities hope to fully unravel the organized ring responsible for similar occurrences in seven other states. Cook expressed gratitude for the inter-agency collaboration that has brought the investigation to this pivotal point, in a confident acknowledgment of law enforcement's dedication.
Alongside the spiraling fear among worshippers, the series of thefts highlighted a pattern of targeting spiritual centers, with over a dozen incidents reported involving both Buddhist and Hindu temples nationwide. The arrest of Chiciu could mark the beginning of the end of this interstate crime wave, ensuring that congregations can return to their sacred spaces without the looming threat of violation.
