Alaska Airlines is expanding its connectivity from Portland International Airport (PDX) by introducing its first nonstop service to New Orleans. The new route, which starts operating in January, will allow Portland residents to journey directly to the heart of the "Big Easy" in time for events such as the vibrant Mardi Gras celebrations. According to KGW, the newly announced daily services will continue through the upcoming spring season.
In practical terms, the schedule is crafted to enable travelers to depart from PDX in the early hours of the morning and, return on flights arriving in the evening - optimizing the time spent in New Orleans. OregonLive reports that this launch marks a further step in Alaska Airlines' growth, as the carrier has already exceeded pre-pandemic levels of interstate service from PDX and even recently initiated flights to Nashville, another fresh destination for Portland's primary airport.
New Orleans represents the 55th nonstop destination served by Alaska Airlines from Portland. This connection is expected to be a beneficial addition for both cities, enhancing cultural and business ties. "Alaska’s continued investment in PDX is great news for our travel community. Until now, New Orleans was one of the largest U.S. markets without a nonstop from PDX," said Dan Pippenger, chief aviation officer at the Port of Portland, "in a statement obtained by KGW. "Tens of thousands of travelers already fly between these two great cities every year, and we expect that number to only grow with this new nonstop service."
Details of the flight frequencies, the start date for the service, and the seasonal duration suggest strategic timing to capitalize on both cities' peak events and travel periods. KATU underscores that the service will run daily, ensuring continuous access between Portland and New Orleans, including the period of Mardi Gras. As Portlanders make plans for their annual cultural pilgrimages or just seek a change of scenery, Alaska Airlines' nonstop route is slated to simplify travel plans considerably.
