Early Saturday morning, a reported brush fire near Wears Valley Road took an unexpected turn for local emergency crews in Blount County. Upon arrival, firefighters from the Townsend Area Volunteer Fire Department and Blount County Sheriff’s deputies found not a minor ground fire, but a structure fully engulfed in flames. The incendiary incident was first reported by WVLT on June 9, with confirmations coming later from additional sources.
The time of the call to first responders was pinpointed at "around 4:10 a.m. on Saturday," and while initial details indicated a natural landscape ablaze, the situation had proved significantly graver. A statement by the Townsend Area Volunteer Fire Department, documented by WATE, described the discovery of the structure fire that had already taken full hold by the time units arrived. Subsequent images released depict firefighters combating the flames next to what appears to be a cabin-style domicile.
Thankfully, the fire has since been contained. However, remnants of the structure's foundation are expected to continue to smolder for a few days before the site can be cleared as safe. This was echoed in a post from the Townsend Area Volunteer Fire Department's Facebook page, crediting the combined efforts of local fire divisions and law enforcement in their response.
