CapMetro is currently in the process of public consultation regarding the expansion of Leander's Pickup Zone, an initiative set to grow the on-demand service area by 0.64 square miles. This development, targeted to include additional residential localities and critical centers like the Cedar Park Regional Emergency Center and DaVita Leander Dialysis, aims to bridge the transportation gap for almost 4,000 more residents.

With ridership witnessing an explosive growth of 788% from 2020 to 2023 as per CapMetro data, the expansion project presented at the May 16 City Council meeting is a response to heightened demand. Community Impact reports that the expanded service will additionally encompass shopping areas like Randall’s and residential complexes such as Lakeline Apartments and Crystal Falls Crossing.

Leander's Mayor, Christine DeLisle, emphasized the significance of the expansion, stating, "This is going to impact so many people. There’s just so much in this expansion; it’s so substantial with just a little bit more space on it, and I’m very excited for this," in a statement obtained by Community Impact. Akin to a lifeline for many, the expanded service marks the first time access to an emergency care facility will be readily available through CapMetro's on-demand offering.

While CapMetro's proposal seems to have the city's pulse, it is waiting for a final nod following a public hearing scheduled for June 12. Interested parties have the option to attend in person or register to contribute their voices virtually, as noted by KXAN. The service operates on weekdays from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays. Assuming green lights all around, the roll-out of the expanded service would commence on August 19.

The details of the current operations, including pickup and drop-off points for CapMetro’s Leander Pickup Zone, can be found online. As CapMetro navigates the public feedback process, the expansion's potential to facilitate better connectivity and support community mobility hangs in keen anticipation.
