In a significant change to its leadership, the Coconino County Board of Supervisors elected new heads at its latest meeting. Judy Begay now stands as Chair and Patrice Horstman as Vice-Chair, with both officials primed to serve through the end of 2024.

The transition, which occurred on June 4, marks the first time either Supervisor will hold their respective new posts. Begay, who has been the Vice-Chair since August 202,3, and Horstman, who previously served as Chair until her term ended in August 2023, bring a fresh dynamic to the Board.

In a statement obtained by Coconino County’s official website, Chair Begay reflected on her journey, saying, “I first want to thank the Board. My father said to me, ‘never forget your culture or where you come from.’ At a young age I got up every morning to take care of the sheep, cattle, horses, and goats, and brought in water for my family. It was hard work, but it had to be done. That kind of early discipline prepared me to excel in higher education. This made me a well-rounded person and someone who is able to take on this leadership responsibility. Growing up in the Navajo Nation I never thought I would be in this position, serving on this Board,” Begay's roots in the Navajo Nation and her multifaceted background in various civic duties have shaped her approach to leadership.

Outgoing Chairman Jeronimo Vasquez lauded the capabilities of his successors. “I look forward to Chair Begay’s leadership of this Board," Vasquez stated, affirming his continuation as a representative for District 2. Horstman echoed this sentiment, recognizing Vasquez's accomplishments and emphasizing the importance of his guidance through several County challenges.

The County Board seems focused on maintaining continuity and growth, a point underlined by Vice-Chair Horstman's recognition of Vasquez's stewardship. The Board's next convening is an executive session set for June 11, with the promise of maintaining accessible communication with the public through live-streamed meetings available on the County’s website.
