Residents in Dallas and surrounding North and Central Texas areas can expect to face another sweltering day, as the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Heat Advisory in effect until 7 PM CDT this evening. With temperatures soaring and heat index values reaching 110, the NWS has warned of the increased risk for heat-related illnesses. Individuals working or participating in outdoor activities are advised to take extra precautions, such as drinking plenty of fluids, wearing lightweight clothing, and taking frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments.
According to the National Weather Service, the city will continue to see high temperatures throughout the week, with highs near or above the 100-degree. Despite the Heat Advisory, the weather outlook includes a slight chance for showers and thunderstorms tonight, which may only temporarily relieve the heat.
The oppressive heat is not a temporary guest, with forecasts predicting it will persist through the ensuing weekend. "There is a slight chance of thunderstorms generally north of I-20 this afternoon and tonight. Severe thunderstorms are not expected," according to the National Weather Service in their Hazardous Weather Outlook. The NWS also advises that spotter activation is not expected at this time.
Residents are strongly advised to stay informed by monitoring the latest weather forecasts and be prepared for the high temperatures. The NWS encourages that everyone check up on relatives, and neighbors, and ensure that pets are not left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. With heat index values reaching dangerously high levels, it is essential to recognize the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Heat stroke is an emergency and should prompt an immediate call to 9 1 1.
