Heads up, DC residents and visitors: the Capital Pride Parade and Block Party will bring color, celebration, and significant street closures to the city this weekend. According to the Metropolitan Police Department, these festivities championing love and equality will also necessitate logistical adjustments for motorists navigating Northwest and downtown DC from June 8 to June 9.
The parade, scheduled for Saturday, will kick off on 15th Street from Rhode David Avenue to U Street, NW, carving a path through the city that includes T Street, NW, and Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, before dispersing on 7th Street from Pennsylvania Avenue, NW to Independence Avenue, SW, the parade is a resolve to stand united in the face of history which too often tells a different tale, one of exclusion and pain for many in the LGBTQ community, the block party, meanwhile, will take up 17th Street from P Street to Riggs Place, NW. Alternative routes for those trying to get around the closures include U Street, Massachusetts Avenue, Independence Avenue, and the 3rd Street Tunnel.
Residents who find themselves within the embrace of the parade route will still be allowed access to their homes. Officials recommend approaching from 16th Street, where officers stationed will assist in navigating the restricted area. For downtown goers, intermittent traffic closures may affect the areas east of 14th Street, NW; including City Center, Chinatown, and the Capital One Arena, so it’s wise to expect some delays and plan accordingly.
Emergency no parking restrictions will be enforced starting early on Saturday, June 8 at 4:00 a.m. and will stretch until 1:00 a.m. the following day affecting streets that include parts of T Street, NW, Massachusetts Avenue, NW, and Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, among several others, while these measures may cause inconvenience, they underscore the city’s commitment to ensuring safety and order during this significant and lively public event.
