The DeSoto Police Department is ramping up its patrols this Independence Day, actively scouting for illegal fireworks and the dangerous tradition of celebratory gunfire. With fines for possession of fireworks reaching up to $2,000 in DeSoto, law enforcement is taking a no-nonsense stance on enforcement of these regulations. According to the DeSoto Police Department, the consequences escalate to potential felony charges should celebratory gunfire result in injury.
Residents are encouraged to quickly report any sightings of illegal fireworks activities using the non-emergency number, 972-223–6111. This is a deliberate strategy to keep the emergency lines open for more imminent threats. The DeSoto Police Department stated a clear warning: "if someone is injured as a result of celebratory gunfire, the offender could face felony charges!" It is an annual issue that police departments aim to strictly manage, to ensure to largely prevent injuries and disruptions this holiday.
The crackdown on these festive yet illegal practices is not just about fines and potential jail time, it’s about community safety. Injuries from both fireworks and stray bullets have marred many a Fourth of July celebration historically. The DeSoto Police's stringent approach mirrors a broader trend as cities across the nation brace for what has become a traditional increase in reckless behavior coinciding with Independence Day festivities.
