Duluth's City Council has a big-ticket item on its agenda tonight. The focus is on Resolution 24-0452R, which if green-lit, will set the city on a path to partner with RDG Planning and Design, Inc. This move is all about pushing forward the Athletics Venues Initiative into its next crucial stage. The project is not a small change—it's a sizable investment aimed at enhancing the city's sporting infrastructure, and it'll be bankrolled by tourism tax dollars earmarked for sports destination tourism.
Task force members, local sports communities, and RDG will come together to discuss and digest draft plans and recommendations, according to a statement obtained by the City of Duluth. Funded entirely by tourism tax dollars, the initiative led by Chair Todd Fedora has been in the works since 2028. Jim Filby Williams, Director of Property, Parks, and Libraries, expressed appreciation, stating, "Our deepest gratitude goes to the task force and to Todd Fedora for their continued guidance on this initiative."
The scope of RDG's engagement includes detailed planning and designing a framework for Duluth's sports facilities that would possibly encompass indoor soccer, lacrosse, baseball, and softball. Additionally, there is a push to include various partnership models in the equation—public-private and intergovernmental partnerships aren't off the table. These efforts are expected to bear fruit come early July, paving the way for more concrete actions to enrich the local sports scene and generate economic boosts via tourism.
Mayor Roger Reinert is brimming with enthusiasm over the prospects this development holds for Dulird, a statement conveyed by the City of Duluth. "I’m excited for our community," Reinert said. "We've already had several potential partners - local and national - express interest. An indoor complex includingice and turf puts the City on par with our regional center peers, and is also what our community both wants and needs." The end goal here isn't just to craft a plan but to attract savvy private partners willing to inject capital and expertise into this community venture through a Request for Proposal (RFP) process.
