In a move that blends old-school charm with contemporary health consciousness, upscale organic market Erewhon is slated to replace the once-beloved Virgil's Hardware Home Center. According to the City of Glendale, the gourmet grocer will bring its luxury brand of organic goods to 520 N. Glendale Avenue and is expected to open its doors in roughly 18 months.
The new Erewhon location will boast an impressive 24,000 square feet, though the market will occupy 18,000 and lease out the remaining space to yet-unnamed complementary tenants. Glendale's Economic Development Division was instrumental in the negotiation, eyeing the site's historical significance and opportune location. "Coming to Glendale is a key step in Erewhon’s mission to improve nutrition and make a lasting impact on the food system in Southern California," Tony Antoci, CEO of Erewhon, told the City of Glendale.
Renovations aren't purely aesthetic; the redevelopment plans include upgraded utilities, landscaping, and outdoor seating designed to dovetail with the neighborhood's history. Erewhon, which has been a staple in Southern California since 1968, continues its growth as an independent, family-owned Certified B Corp and has gained a reputation for its steadfast commitment to organic and ethically-sourced foods.
The Virgil’s site closure in 2019 left a vacancy that is now poised to become a part of Erewhon’s constellation of specialty markets. This decision showcases the city's receptiveness to businesses contributing to community health and wellness while respecting the locale's unique culture. “We are thrilled to have Erewhon in Glendale,” said Bradley Calvert, Glendale Director of Community Development, highlighting the significance of the store's blend of organic options and chef-inspired café for the city. Josephine Antoci, President of Erewhon, also expressed excitement to occupy the historic site, acknowledging the memories it holds for the locals.
As one of the largest cities in Los Angeles County, Glendale continues to diversify its offerings, combining its rich cultural tapestry with modern amenities. Bringing Erewhon into this mix underlines the city's ongoing development and commitment to creating an inviting and health-oriented retail space for its over 200,000 residents.
