In an event marked by Texas pride and economic optimism, Governor Greg Abbott attended the inaugural ribbon cutting ceremony for the world's largest Buc-ee's in Luling, according to the official announcement from the Governor's office. The 75,000-square-foot travel center stands where the brand's first major outpost once did, signifying growth and investment in local communities.
During the event, Governor Abbott emphasized the contribution of Buc-ee's to the Texas economy, citing the creation of over 200 new jobs and a substantial investment of $40 million. "As the state’s greatest fan of 'beaver nuggets,' I am proud that Texas is home to the world’s best convenience store," Abbott said. The travel center's expansion is not limited to Texas, with locations now in Alabama, Colorado, Florida, and Georgia, spreading what Abbott calls Texas hospitality, good barbeque, and beaver nuggets wherever they go. The event drew a sizable crowd, including local and state officials as well as Buc-ee’s President and CEO, Arch “Beaver” Aplin III, alongside customers eager to get a first glimpse at the massive facility.
Reiterating the achievements of the company and its influence on the labor market Governor Abbott praised Buc-ee’s for offering competitive wages. In his remarks, Abbott highlighted, "the company ranks among the top five U.S. retailers for entry-level salaries, with general managers earning up to $225,000 annually." Furthermore, Abbott touched upon wider economic policies, advocating Texas as the premier state for business, attributing this to its skilled workforce and “reasonable regulations.”
Abbott also took the opportunity to signal further fiscal measures, speaking to future prospects of tax cuts, "he will continue to advocate for greater property tax cuts during the next legislative session," as per the official announcement reports. The cordial affair concluded with the presentation of a proclamation to Buc-ee’s CEO, celebrating the grand opening and reinforcing the state’s support for the company's growth and success, playing into the narrative of a pro-business Texas positioning itself for continued economic prosperity.
