On Thursday, officers from the Healdsburg Police Department (HPD) patrolled on foot near the railroad tracks and 1470 Grove St., uncovering numerous homeless encampments blemished by refuse. The makeshift settlements, strewn with waste and debris, were found less than 150 feet from Foss Creek—a troubling discovery given the creek's environmental significance and the strict regulations against pollution that such proximity entails.
Enforcement action was the day's order, with HPD issuing three citations specifically for violating waste and debris ordinances near the waterway, according to the Healdsburg Police Department. The citations come after a period of advisement and multiple warnings from the officers, who have repeatedly visited the encampments offering aid and suggesting resources to the inhabitants.
The HPD, in partnership with Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART), is now focused on initiatives to deter the resettlement of these camps. Efforts include continual patrols and collaboration with social service agencies to address the complexities of homelessness.
