Residents of Hennepin County have been put on high alert due to a recent scam involving impersonators claiming to represent the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office. The fraudsters have been contacting locals, falsely informing them that they owe money for legal matters such as arrest warrants or jury duty.
The Sheriff's Office has issued a clear statement, making it known that they do not ever call to request cash or electronic payments for such issues. They took to social media to spread this message, with a post on their official Facebook page, stating, "Remember, the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office does NOT call to request cash or electronic payment for arrest warrants, jury duty, subpoenas, or other legal matters." In an attempt to prevent residents from falling prey to these deceptive calls, the Sheriff’s Office has urged the public to remain vigilant and not give out personal information over the phone to these con artists.
The scam operates by preying on the fear and confusion of individuals who are caught off guard by the unexpected calls. These scams have become increasingly sophisticated, often using tactics designed to intimidate. The Sheriff’s Office’s Facebook post reminds community members, stating, “If you receive a suspicious phone call, contact your local law enforcement agency.”
Authorities are now asking anyone who might receive such a phone call to promptly report it to local law enforcement.
