According to Action News 5, fire services were summoned to the Cooper Street establishment shortly before 8 p.m., although the cause of the incident has been noted as accidental with no reported injuries.
The unforeseen event prompted the placement of a succinct notice on the restaurant’s entrance the following day, simply stating "Closed Due to Fire," leaving regular patrons and passersby with questions about the future of the diner; already in the past, the restaurant had weathered a closure when a car collision challenged its operations in June 2022 and now facing an arduous journey, owner Beth Henry expressed to The Daily Memphian, "I woke up this morning, and it just hit me again, this really did happen. This is going to be a long haul."
Amid the uncertainty, the depth of damage remains to be ascertained, pending assessments by insurance agents, Bob’s Barksdale has stood as a fixture in the locale since its doors first opened in the 1940s at Barksdale and Union before relocating to its current Cooper Street address in 1967. In a statement obtained by WREG News, owner Beth Henry, who has helmed the diner since her husband's passing in 2014, recounted with evident distress, "I’m in total disbelief. I can’t believe it. It’s very sad."
Nonetheless, the resilience of the establishment and its community support shines amidst the adversity; Henry remarked on the staunch backing of the Midtown denizens who have rallied around the iconic breakfast and lunch spot in past tribulations such as the vehicular incident from the previous year and with ten employees’ livelihoods hanging in the balance and a clientele eager for the diner's return, Henry is steadfast in her belief in Bob’s Barksdale's recovery. "People around here are just so supportive. We know they will give us what we need to do. Give us some time, and we’ll come right back," Henry told WREG News, capturing the spirit of determination that defines both the restaurant and the community it serves.
