A towering titan of train travel is set to become a trailblazer. The Wilburton Trestle, a remnant of King County's industrial past, will soon transform into a new landmark for leisure and locomotion. The 120-year-old, 1,000-foot-long wooden trestle is on track to join the 42-mile Eastrail network, an ambitious project that has caught the eye and pocketbooks of both public and private sectors.
The partnership set to breathe new life into the structure includes a mix of funding firepower: the state through the Climate Commitment Act, retail giant Amazon, the City of Bellevue, and healthcare player Kaiser Permanente. According to King County's official announcement, the project's $37 million price tag will be covered by a blend of voter-approved levies, state grants, and corporate contributions. Amazon alone is slated to chip in $7.5 million to the Eastrail's cause, with the Wilburton Trestle revitalization getting a $5 million slice.
Once completed in the fall of 2026, the public will be able to seamlessly walk, bike, or roll from Wilburton Station on Sound Transit’s 2 Line directly to the historic bridge. The trestle itself will don a new look, standing 100 feet tall and featuring an 18-foot-wide path flanked by viewing platforms that offer panoramic sights of Bellevue's skyline and beyond.
"We’ve built strong partnerships to transform the historic Wilburton Trestle into a trail bridge for Eastrail," King County Executive Dow Constantine told King County News. This initiative promises to quickly become a crowd favorite, augmenting the allure of the emerging Eastrail that aspires to connect communities from South and East King County to Snohomish County, with an additional spur to Redmond.
From a historical perspective, the trestle's narrative is rich—first aiding in the transport of timber before evolving to serve the region’s booming aerospace sector. Now, it's set to play its latest role as a conduit for commute and recreation alike.“The completion of this trail and public greenspace will contribute to the health and enjoyment for our community and will make many of our local Kaiser Permanente medical centers on the eastside more easily accessible by foot or bike.” stated Carla Costa Sandine of Kaiser Permanente Washington.
Politicos are crowing about the coupled benefit of conservation and connectivity the Eastrail supports. Gov. Jay Inslee hailed the project as a testament to the state's climate commitment, while local leaders underscore the trail's potential to link locales and lifestyles. "I cannot wait to ride across this historic bridge as part of the beautiful regional Eastrail! We are so thankful for our partnerships with King County, the State of Washington, Amazon, and Kaiser Permanente for their dedication to creating sustainable, connected infrastructure and vibrant public spaces here in Bellevue.", exclaimed Bellevue Mayor Lynne Robinson in shared sentiments.
