The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has posted an announcement that rumble strip installation activities are scheduled for the latter part of this week on the section of Interstate 95 running through Northeast Philadelphia. This construction forms a part of ongoing efforts to revamp the Cottman Avenue Interchange, necessitating some travel restrictions that will impact local motorists, PennDOT reported.
Specifically, lane closures in alternating patterns will be rolled out in both directions along I-95, stretching from the Academy Road to Cottman Avenue interchanges, drivers should consider extra travel time as setbacks and lingering delays are expected to crop up throughout the affected areas. These disruptions are planned for Thursday, June 27, and Friday, June 28, penciled in between the hours of 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM, and as with all such projects, they are subject to change depending on weather conditions.
For those tracking the developments, this project is an extension of the broader reconstruction efforts spurred by the tanker truck crash and subsequent fire on June 11, 2023, which inflicted considerable damage to the interchange. Traffic flow was tentatively restored with the implementation of a temporary thoroughfare, remarkably developed in a span of 12 days, allowing three lanes of traffic in each direction. Following this, a shift of traffic from these provisional lanes back onto the rebuilt outer sections of the bridge was accomplished this past November.
Signs of progress are evident, as PennDOT unveiled the reinvigorated center section of the Interstate 95 bridge and the northbound off-ramp at the Cottman Avenue Interchange recently reopened in late May, less than a year since the inception of construction, marking a significant milestone in the restoration works and the recommitment to infrastructure resilience.
