An investigation is currently underway following the death of 45-year-old Amadeo Danis Garcia Deleon, who died while in custody of the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD). The incident unfolded yesterday evening, according to officials. SAPD was called to a situation reportedly involving an assault in progress at approximately 8:30 p.m. on the 5100 block of S. Flores Street, as reported by KENS5.
Upon arrival at the scene, officers found the man acting in an erratic manner, as he was running around a store in his underwear. Attempts by witnesses to calm Garcia Deleon were unsuccessful. When approached by an officer, a struggle ensued before Garcia Deleon was promptly handcuffed. Shortly afterward, the man's body went limp, prompting the detaining officer to immediately begin attempting to administer life-saving measures, which included the use of Narcan, a drug typically used to counter the effects of opioid overdoses.
Emergency services arrived swiftly but continued efforts to resuscitate Garcia Deleon proved futile, as he was pronounced dead at the location. Details concerning his erratic behavior prior to police arrival were sparse, but the scene described indicates a rapid escalation from the initial call to the tragic outcome. The Bexar County Medical Examiner is set to conduct an investigation to ascertain the cause of death.
FOX San Antonio identified the deceased as Amadeo Danis Garcia De Leon, matching the age and name provided by the Bexar County Medical Examiner. Authorities have not yet released additional details as the investigation to fully understand the chain of events is ongoing.
