The Knoxville Police Department (KPD) responded to a call earlier today involving a woman who reportedly had a knife and was threatening to harm herself and others. The incident, which took place at a home on Belle Terra Road, escalated when the woman charged officers with the knife, leading to her being shot and subsequently dying from her injuries. WVLT reported that the event occurred around 7 a.m., and upon officers' arrival, the woman, still armed, ran towards them prompting a response by three officers to fatally shoot her.
Officials indicated that the officers tried to provide medical attention to the woman while awaiting an ambulance. Once on the scene, AMR transported her to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. According to WVLT, this was followed by the standard protocol of placing the three involved officers on administrative leave. Moreover, the scene by Belle Terra Road became the subject of an ongoing investigation spearheaded by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI).
The Knoxville Police, in accord with standard procedures, affirmed that both an internal and external investigation into the shooting are underway. The KPD's Office of Professional Standards is set to conduct the internal review. The story initially surfaced via WATE, noting that the TBI will lead what determines the full circumstances around the officers' use of force.
Public details on the identity of the woman or the precise nature of the threat she posed have not yet been released. WBIR similarly reported the narrative of the woman charging towards officers with a knife. The outcomes from such incidents routinely spark broader discussions on police tactics, mental healthcare, and the use of deadly force in confrontations involving individuals in crisis.
