The Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give, an event known not only for its competitive golf but also its commitment to tackling food insecurity, has successfully met its aim of raising $2 million to support food pantries in the Midwest, as reported by WZZM 13. The tournament, which is now in its 10th iteration, has cumulatively contributed over $12 million toward the Simply Give program since its inception.
Emotional yet triumphant, Lilia Vu claimed the 2024 Championship at Blythefield Country Club after sustaining a challenging back injury that saw her absence from the course since the Ford Championship in March; her victory marks her fifth win on the LPGA Tour, which included a suspense-filled playoff finish where she edged out contenders Lexi Thompson and Grace Kim, as detailed by PRNewswire. "I think this is the most meaningful win, because there was a time two months ago where I was just crying on the range not sure if I would ever play a tournament again without pain, to be here today, it's just incredible," Vu told PRNewswire.
Alongside the golfing excellence, the event highlighted its societal contribution by attracting a record-breaking number of fans and volunteers amidst a plethora of family-friendly activities, catering to a wide audience and making a substantial difference within local communities as Rick Keyes, Meijer President & CEO, emphasized in a statement obtained by PRNewswire. The extensive planning is already in motion for next year's event, with dates set to be announced soon.
The narrative of the event extends beyond the green, deeply rooted in the ethos of supporting the hungry, as illustrated by Meijer Executive Chair Hank Meijer and pro golfer Brittany Lang's visit to The Other Way Ministries Food Pantry, covered by FOX 17 News, wherein Meijer stated, "You can love golf, but we wouldn't be putting on a golf tournament for its own sake, we're doing it because there are people who need to eat; we're in the business of supplying food, If we can help meet that serious need in our community, Simply Give is the way to go." Vu will also have the honor of directing a $25,000 donation to a hunger relief organization of her preference, continuing a tradition set by Meijer since 2021; the beneficiary of this charitable act is yet to be disclosed.
