A man has been cuffed in connection with a brazen daylight robbery following a fender-bender in Northeast Washington, D.C., local police say.
The Metropolitan Police Department revealed that on the afternoon of May 24, a driver was rear-ended on the 600 block of Kenilworth Terrace, Northeast. The suspect, after causing the collision, reportedly pounced on the opportunity - taking the victim's property before making off in the chaos of the crash - with police hot on his trail soon after.
After a thorough investigation, Tevin Devonta Fletcher, age 30, from Suitland, MD, was nabbed by detectives and has been charged with an array of offenses including robbery and leaving after colliding. The detectives' sleuthing also uncovered that Fletcher was driving with no permit and was wanted as a fugitive from justice. MPD's official report detailed the wrap sheet, released on June 2.
Fletcher, who is far from a stranger to law enforcement, having been flagged as a fugitive, now faces the law on his home turf. Negotiating the tricky waters of the criminal justice system, Fletcher will have to answer for the Northeast robbery, among the other charges placed upon him including that of being a footloose perpetrator with a rap sheet that's clearly something out of a perp's worst nightmare. Details about Fletcher's legal representation or his plea in response to the charges remain currently undisclosed.
Community members, often concerned about the uptick in street-level robberies, are watching the case closely as it unfolds. This latest arrest, the police hope, will signal to potential wrongdoers that the repercussions for such crimes in the District will be swift and substantial.
