A truck spill of meat products caused a major traffic jam on Interstate 880 in Oakland on Friday evening, leading to the closure of northbound lanes for several hours. According to CBS San Francisco, the lanes were closed shortly after 6 p.m. when a truck lost its haul of chicken and beef parts, leaving a gruesome scene that required a substantial cleanup effort.
The incident took place near 29th Ave., where initially two lanes were closed, but the spill soon affected all but one of the northbound lanes. The CHP Oakland's X page reported the blockage and advised drivers to expect delays and explore alternate routes. Photos posted on social media depicted lanes covered with a viscous red substance, causing a slowdown of vehicles trying to navigate through or around the mess.

Caltrans crews were dispatched and arrived on the scene around 6:50 p.m. to begin the removal of the debris. The cleanup operation led to the temporary closure of all lanes, with lane 1 reopening by 7:03 p.m., as Caltrans worked to clear the remaining lanes. An estimated time of reopening was initially uncertain, with updates promised to follow.
Despite the disruption and traffic backup, the northbound lanes of I-880 were fully reopened by 9:30 p.m. the same evening. Motorists, who were earlier advised to drive slowly through the cleared lane #4, were once again able to utilize the full expanse of the freeway following hours of restricted access due to the spill.
