As the mercury climbs to levels that dial up the risk of heat-related illnesses, the City of Memphis has taken steps to offer residents some much-needed respite from the oppressive heat. The Hospitality Hub, located at 590 Washington Ave, opened its doors today as an emergency cooling center, providing a haven of cool for those needing to escape the triple-digit temperatures, according to FOX13 Memphis. The facility will operate from noon until 8 p.m.
In an effort to ensure accessibility, Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) offers to freely transport individuals to the cooling center starting at 11:30 a.m. however, those interested must call in advance to arrange a pickup. The MATA contact number is 901-297-1690, as reported by Action News 5. It's crucial to note that the center's brief hours of operation may not cover the entire spectrum of needs, leading some to seek further support.
While the emergency cooling center offers daytime relief, the city also has provisions for those in need of food assistance or overnight accommodations. Locations include the Memphis Union Mission and The Salvation Army. Interested individuals can contact Memphis Union Mission at 901-526-8403 or The Salvation Army at 901-529-4545 for support, as stated by Local Memphis. These shelters provide a vital sanctuary and services beyond just a cooler environment.
Memphians needing transport to these shelters may also quickly arrange for MATA services, which continue to be an essential lifeline for residents affected by the scorching conditions.
