Residents of Mesquite have a fresh opportunity to learn what it takes to be a part of their police force. The Mesquite Police Department has announced its upcoming Citizens Police Academy, a gesture they say is aimed at fostering closer ties between law enforcement and the community. Set to run on Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m., this educational series will give participants an intimate look at the inner workings of police operations.
The program, which will start on September 5th, offers an "accelerated overview of the various operations of the Mesquite Police Department," according to the Mesquite Police Department. As part of the curriculum, citizens will hear from real officers, about the training recruits undergo to earn their badges. Space is limited, and those interested in getting a spot are encouraged to apply quickly.
Prospective attendees must be at least 18 years old and are advised that a background check will be part of the application process. The program aims to not only educate but also to create advocates within the community. "What you learn will not only benefit you but, if shared with family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers, it could have a significant impact on police and community relations in our city," says the Mesquite Police Department.
The Citizens Police Academy represents the Mesquite Police Department’s pledge to connect with its residents, sharing the hurdles law enforcement faces every day. Interested individuals have until June 30th to submit their applications, with the advisory that spots fill up fast. The application form, which can be found on Mesquite's website, is to be sent electronically to the police department for review.
